By Zoila Palma: Thousands of Argentines braved cold and rainy weather on Monday to welcome the national football team home following its 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Although the homecoming was not the celebration many had hoped for after Argentina’s 2022 triumph, fans filled the streets with singing, dancing and fireworks to show their appreciation for the players.
Captain and star forward Lionel Messi was not seen among the players arriving on the flight, while coach Lionel Scaloni and the rest of the squad were greeted with a red carpet and military band before boarding a bus to meet cheering supporters.
Despite the defeat, fans said they remained proud of the team and grateful for its achievements.
Messi addressed the defeat in an Instagram post on Monday, writing: “the pain is immense and it’s going to take a long time for this wound to heal.”
He added: “I’ll also hold on to all the good memories,” alongside a photo of himself.
“Today it’s hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals.”
Fans also praised Messi for the years of success he has brought to the national team, with some urging the 39-year-old star to continue playing for Argentina.
