By Zoila Palma: Tennessee officials have announced plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of country music legend Dolly Parton, following her death earlier this week.
Governor Bill Lee and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) are supporting the proposal, with a meeting scheduled for September 17 to discuss the next steps.
“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Governor Lee said. He described Parton as Tennessee’s “favorite daughter” and said naming the airport after her would reflect her legacy of music, generosity, faith and kindness.
MNAA President and CEO Doug Kreulen also backed the proposal, saying the airport is the “front door to Music City” and should reflect the best of the community. He said Parton’s legacy of dignity, kindness and opportunity represents values shared by Nashville and Tennessee.
If approved, Parton would become only the second American musician to have an airport named after them, following Louis Armstrong in New Orleans.
