By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV marked the United States’ Independence Day with a call for Americans to welcome immigrants with “compassion and generosity” during a visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, one of Europe’s main entry points for migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

In a letter released upon his arrival, the first American pontiff said protecting human life means “welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants,” whose “hopes, sacrifices and contribution” have helped shape the history of the United States.

The pope began his visit at the “Door to Europe,” a monument honoring the thousands of migrants who have died or disappeared while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

He later visited the island’s cemetery, including a section dedicated to migrants, where he paid tribute to those who lost their lives. During his visit, Pope Leo also met with migrants and blessed a commemorative plaque honoring Pope Francis, who made a landmark visit to Lampedusa in 2013.

In his letter marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, Pope Leo wrote that, “In every generation, those who have arrived seeking freedom, opportunity and a place to belong have helped to shape the nation’s character.” He added that receiving immigrants “with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that belongs to every human person.” Two senior U.S. Catholic Church leaders told CNN that the pope’s decision to spend July 4 in Lampedusa sends a powerful message to the United States about immigration.

The Chicago-born pope was welcomed by crowds waving flags as he celebrated an open-air Mass on the island.
