By Zoila Palma: Peru’s Constitutional Court has overturned the 15-year prison sentence imposed on former President Ollanta Humala, declaring the criminal proceedings against him null and void.
Humala, who served as president from 2011 to 2016, was convicted in 2025 of money laundering linked to allegations that he received illegal campaign financing from Venezuela’s former president Hugo Chávez and Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
The court’s decision is expected to pave the way for Humala’s release from Barbadillo Prison in Lima, BBC reports.
His lawyer, Julio Espinoza Goyena, said on social media that the court had ruled that the campaign contributions received by Humala did not constitute money laundering and called for the criminal case to be definitively dismissed.
Humala’s wife and former political ally, Nadine Heredia, was also sentenced to 15 years for money laundering in the same case. However, she was granted safe passage to Brazil after seeking asylum at the Brazilian embassy in Lima. The couple had been accused of accepting $3 million from Odebrecht for Humala’s 2011 presidential campaign and $200,000 from Chávez to support his 2006 campaign, allegations they consistently denied.
