By Zoila Palma: Panama transferred 97 deported migrants from the U.S. to a camp in Darien province on Wednesday after they refused to voluntarily return to their home countries, AP reports.

The migrants, part of a larger group of 299 deportees, are mostly from Asian nations. They will remain at the camp until third countries can be found to accept them. The Darien province has become a key route for migrants traveling from South America to the U.S. border in recent years.

The Panamanian government stated that 13 of the deportees have voluntarily returned to their countries, while the rest are under police guard in a Panama City hotel awaiting further travel arrangements. Authorities reported the recapture of a Chinese migrant who had briefly escaped from the hotel, blaming the incident on human traffickers. Panama has denied that the deportees are detained, but they remain unable to leave the hotel under police surveillance.

The remaining deportees, most of whom are from countries difficult for the U.S. to directly deport, will be held at a temporary facility near the Darien Gap.

This heavily forested region, bordering Colombia, has long been a passage for migrants on their way to the U.S. border. The Panamanian government has been working to manage the influx of migrants amid U.S. efforts to speed up deportations.
