By Zoila Palma:  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday plans to propose constitutional reforms aimed at protecting the country’s sovereignty following the U.S. designation of six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, AP reports.

The move, part of a January 20 executive order by former President Donald Trump, has sparked concerns in Mexico about potential U.S. military intervention, which the Mexican government firmly rejects.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico would not tolerate foreign interference in its internal affairs, including unauthorized involvement in investigations or prosecutions.

She also proposed enshrining limits on foreign agents’ activities in the Mexican constitution, a policy previously introduced by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In addition, Sheinbaum’s administration seeks to strengthen penalties for foreigners involved in arms trafficking into Mexico, urging the U.S. to do more to stop the flow of weapons.

Mexico’s Morena party, which holds a majority in Congress, is expected to support these reforms.
