By Zoila Palma: More than 1,100 firefighters are battling a major wildfire that has scorched approximately 2,500 hectares in the mountainous Var region of southern France, northeast of Marseille.
Today, officials said that they were working to extinguish remaining fire pockets before strong Mistral winds, expected later in the day, could intensify the blaze.
The regional government reported that four people suffered minor smoke inhalation, while 10 homes were destroyed and about 50 others damaged.
Firefighters, however, managed to prevent the flames from spreading to hundreds of additional homes. The emergency response includes four firefighting aircraft, three helicopters, around 350 vehicles and reinforcements from neighboring regions.
The wildfire forced about 500 residents from threatened villages to spend the night in emergency shelters.
Hundreds of households near the villages of Cotignac and Pontevès remain without electricity, and several roads have been closed as crews continue to battle the flames.
