By Zoila Palma:  Federal and Texas authorities are continuing efforts to contain the spread of the New World screwworm after confirmed cases in the United States climbed to 12 over the weekend.

As of June 15, officials reported 11 cases in Texas and one case in New Mexico, prompting the expansion of quarantine zones in parts of Texas to help prevent further spread of the parasitic fly, USA Today reports.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Texas cases have been detected in domestic cattle, goats, and sheep across several counties, including Edwards, Gillespie, La Salle, Sutton, Tom Green, and Zavala. The New Mexico case involves a dog that lives in Lea County and was first reported by a veterinarian in neighboring Andrews County, Texas.

In response to the growing number of cases, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the launch of a free online training course for animal professionals and veterinarians aimed at increasing the number of certified New World screwworm inspectors. Meanwhile, the Texas Animal Health Commission has placed 15 counties under quarantine restrictions to limit animal movement and reduce the risk of further infestations.

The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans and birds.

Officials say the current risk to people and animals in the United States remains very low and stress that the parasite is not contagious.

Infestations occur when female flies lay eggs in wounds or body openings, allowing larvae to hatch and feed on living tissue. The recent case involving a dog has also raised concerns among pet owners, prompting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to authorize the emergency use of an over-the-counter generic treatment for pets.
