By Zoila Palma: White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on the second day of the papal conclave, signaling the election of a new pope. The identity of the pontiff — and the name he has chosen — will be revealed shortly from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica with the traditional “Habemus papam” announcement.
The 133 cardinal-electors reached a decision after either the fourth or fifth ballot, continuing a recent trend: the last three popes, including Benedict XVI and Francis, were all elected on the conclave’s second day.
Cheers erupted in St. Peter’s Square as bells tolled, marking the end of the closely watched voting process.
