By Zoila Palma: One month after twin earthquakes devastated northern Venezuela, more than 21,000 people remain displaced and living in temporary shelters, while families continue searching for missing loved ones.
Humanitarian organizations warn that the disaster is quickly becoming a long-term recovery crisis that could take years to overcome.
More than 5,200 people have died and nearly 17,000 others have been injured, while the World Bank estimates the earthquakes caused $19.6 billion in direct physical damage.
Entire neighborhoods remain in ruins, with schools, hospitals, roads and businesses struggling to reopen.
Nearly 18,000 homes were reportedly destroyed or left uninhabitable, forcing thousands of families into shelters, schools, sports facilities and temporary camps, Latin Times reports.
Although formal search-and-rescue operations ended weeks ago, families in the hardest-hit areas, including La Guaira and neighboring states, continue to search for answers about missing relatives.
Aid workers say survivors are also facing shortages of housing, clean water, medical care and essential services, while overcrowded shelters and damaged infrastructure raise concerns about public health risks.
