By Zoila Palma: The number of people missing following catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border has surpassed 3,000, as rescue operations enter their fourth day.
More than 600 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, while at least seven have died in China, with authorities warning that the toll could continue to rise, CNN reports.
Nepal is struggling to cope with the number of bodies recovered from the disaster.
The Foreign Minister has appealed to other countries for specialized assistance and additional freezers to preserve remains. Authorities are also preparing to bury unidentified bodies in a mass grave as rescue teams continue searching affected areas.
Meanwhile, one of two newly formed lakes near the flood zone has been “essentially drained,” according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The formation of the lakes had raised fears of further landslides and flooding, prompting Nepali and Chinese officials to temporarily suspend some emergency operations on Friday. The first lake is now experiencing normal natural outflow, officials said.
Scientists are still investigating the precise causes of the disaster, but initial findings indicate that a massive section of glacier broke away from a mountainside on Wednesday and plunged about one kilometer into the valley below.
