By Zoila Palma:  The CARICOM Secretariat has launched a new regional initiative aimed at empowering women and youth in agriculture as Caribbean nations, including Belize, face growing climate challenges.

The program, supported by the Government of New Zealand, seeks to strengthen the region’s agri-food systems and improve long-term resilience.

The project, titled CARICOM Boost: Women and Youth in Agriculture, is designed to build capacity in agribusiness while advancing food security.

It forms part of a wider regional effort to reduce the Caribbean’s food import bill by 25% by 2030, a key target for economic sustainability and resilience.

So far, the initiative is supporting 188 women and young participants across 10 CARICOM member states.

It provides training in agricultural best practices, production techniques, and post-harvest management, equipping participants with the skills needed to expand opportunities within the agribusiness sector.
