By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum unveiled a plan to combat the popularity of “narco corridos,” a music genre often associated with drug cartel violence.
Sheinbaum announced a campaign to promote non-violent musical styles and reduce the glorification of drug traffickers, AP reports.
The initiative includes a competition for corrido bands that focus on positive themes and alternative cultural visions, emphasizing promotion over prohibition.
Sheinbaum highlighted the involvement of Durango’s Governor Esteban Villegas, a “banda” singer, to support the effort.
While some Mexican cities have attempted to ban narco corridos with limited success, musicians like Marco Antonio Gordoa Obeso of Mazatlan acknowledge that audiences often prefer the genre, saying, “People ask for it.”
