By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is signaling a tougher stance against drug cartels, deploying thousands of troops and special forces to combat escalating violence in Sinaloa, Reuters report.
This marks a shift from her predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s “hugs not bullets” policy, which focused on addressing the social causes of crime rather than direct confrontation.
Since taking office, Sheinbaum has overseen the largest military deployment to the region in six years, following a deadly cartel war that began in September. High-profile arrests and major drug busts, including a record fentanyl seizure, suggest a more aggressive approach.
This shift aligns with U.S. pressures, particularly from President-elect Donald Trump, who has called for stronger actions against drug trafficking and illegal migration. However, experts warn this confrontational strategy could worsen violence, as armed cartels remain heavily equipped.
Security expert Vicente Sánchez noted the change, indicating the end of López Obrador’s less confrontational policy. Critics argue the previous strategy allowed organized crime to strengthen its hold on the country. The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, has also criticized the approach, calling it a failure.
Sheinbaum’s security chief, Omar García Harfuch, is leading the operations in Sinaloa. While the new strategy has drawn comparisons to former President Felipe Calderón’s military crackdown in 2006, some experts caution that each cartel requires a tailored response to avoid exacerbating violence.
