By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a defamation lawsuit against Jeffrey Lichtman, the American lawyer known for defending Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and his sons, after Lichtman suggested that Sheinbaum’s ruling party is tied to cartel corruption.
Sheinbaum announced the suit on July 15, saying it was filed through Mexico’s Federal Legal Counsel, USA Today reports.
She defended her record, stating, “My history speaks for me.”
Lichtman made the remarks outside a Chicago courtroom while representing Ovidio Guzmán López, one of El Chapo’s sons, who has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and is cooperating with U.S. authorities.
Lichtman claimed his client could expose corruption in Mexico’s Morena party.
The suit marks a rare legal step by Mexico against a U.S. citizen over political speech — and underscores the tense intersection of crime, politics, and international law.
