By Zoila Palma: A bronze monument depicting Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara has been removed from a small park in Mexico City, igniting fierce reactions across the political spectrum, the LA Times report.
Installed in 2017 to mark the pair’s first meeting in the capital in 1955, the sculpture showed them seated on a bench in military attire.
Critics called it a tribute to dictators; supporters saw it as a symbol of revolutionary history.
Conservative borough president Alessandra Rojo de la Vega ordered the removal, citing legal and ideological grounds.
Mexico’s leftist President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the decision, defending the monument as a marker of historical memory.
