By Zoila Palma: On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her government has “no issue” with hosting Iran’s national football team during the upcoming World Cup after the squad’s training base was moved from the United States to Mexico.
The team will continue to play its group-stage matches in the U.S., but will now stay and train in Tijuana, just south of San Diego, AP reports.
The relocation was recently announced by Iran’s football federation and formally confirmed Monday by FIFA as part of the official list of World Cup base camp sites. The move comes amid the ongoing war in Iran, which began after the United States and Israel launched military action on February 28.
Speaking at a news conference, Sheinbaum said a FIFA representative informed her that the United States was reluctant to have Iran’s team remain on American territory outside of match days.
According to Sheinbaum, FIFA asked whether the team could stay overnight in Mexico, to which her government responded positively. Before the conflict, Iran had planned to establish its World Cup base in Tucson, Arizona.
Iran is scheduled to play group-stage matches against New Zealand in Inglewood, California, on June 15, Belgium on June 21, and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 and be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
