By Zoila Palma:  Pope Leo XIV’s sweeping warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence drew a largely muted response from major technology leaders, despite sparking debate across the industry over regulation, ethics and the future of AI development. T

he pope’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas or Magnificent Humanity, was published Monday and called for stronger oversight of the rapidly expanding technology.

In the roughly 42,300-word document, Leo urged greater regulation of private companies driving the AI boom, protections for workers facing economic disruption and safeguards against AI-generated misinformation. He also criticized the increasing ease with which autonomous weapons systems can be deployed, while stressing that technology should never replace the essential human capacity for relationships and love.

Silicon Valley’s most prominent AI executives, including Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, did not immediately comment publicly on the encyclical, NBC reports.

Major technology companies including Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI and xAI also did not respond to requests for comment.

Some technology leaders and researchers, however, welcomed the pope’s message.

Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah, who appeared alongside Leo during the presentation of the encyclical, praised the involvement of “moral voices” in guiding the AI industry. Olah said religious communities, governments, scholars and civil society should help shape the conversation and provide criticism when technology companies fall short.
