By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has partially blamed the United States for the recent surge in cartel violence in Sinaloa, which has left at least 30 dead in the past week.
Clashes between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel erupted following the arrests of two leaders in the U.S. last month.
During a morning briefing, he was asked if the U.S. government was “jointly responsible” for this violence in Sinaloa, the president said, “Yes, of course … for having carried out this operation.”
Culiacán, the state capital, has seen a spike in violence, with heavily armed gunmen clashing in the streets and bodies discovered throughout the city.
Many residents are reluctant to leave their homes, and schools remain open but under-attended due to safety fears.
López Obrador’s comments reflect escalating tensions in U.S.-Mexico relations, especially following his controversial judicial reforms criticized by U.S. ambassadors.
As his presidency nears its end, he continues to advocate a “hugs not bullets” approach, despite ongoing violence fueled by advanced cartel tactics.
