By Zoila Palma: Kylian Mbappé scored his 8th goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as France defeated Morocco 2-0 to secure a place in the semifinals for the third consecutive tournament.
The French star recovered from a first-half penalty miss to help guide the defending champions into the final four, where they will face either Spain or Belgium.
Mbappé found the net in the 60th minute after his penalty attempt in the first half was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Six minutes later, he provided the assist for Ousmane Dembélé’s goal, sealing France’s victory.
France suffered a brief scare after Mbappé was stepped on by Morocco defender Issa Diop in the 63rd minute. Although he continued playing for several minutes, the forward signaled to the bench in the 76th minute before being substituted a minute later.
After the match, Mbappé downplayed concerns about the injury, saying he had taken a knock to the ankle but was “fine.”
When asked if this was his strongest France team yet, Mbappé said it has the most potential — “for the time being.”
“But I always say that the strongest teams are the ones that win,” he said. “I don’t see a World Cup next to me, so for now, we’re not the strongest team.”
