By Zoila Palma: A mayor in central Mexico who survived an assassination attempt earlier this year was shot and killed inside the town hall, authorities said Wednesday.
Valentin Lavin, mayor of Temoac in the state of Morelos, was found dead inside local government facilities, CBS reports.
Lavin, who was allied with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leftist political party, had reportedly survived an armed attack in January.
Temoac is located in Morelos, a region near Mexico City that has been affected by the presence and activities of several criminal groups.
Forensic experts and police officers were dispatched to the scene after the killing was reported.
Authorities said an operation was underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack, but no further details were immediately released.
The killing adds to a long list of local officials targeted in Mexico’s ongoing battle with organized crime.
Official figures show that nearly 100 mayors have been murdered since 2006, when the country’s drug-related violence intensified.
