By Zoila Palma: Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro announced that his government will send a plane to Mexico on Thursday to retrieve 300 Venezuelan migrants, primarily women and children, who he claims fled the U.S. to escape persecution.
The move follows heightened deportation policies under the Trump administration, which has been sending Venezuelans accused of gang ties to a prison in El Salvador, the Miami Herald reports.
Maduro stated the flight would “rescue” the migrants, who he says crossed into Mexico to avoid U.S. deportations linked to accusations of connections with the Tren de Aragua gang, which the U.S. has labeled a terrorist group.
Critics, however, argue the action is a political strategy, pointing to Maduro’s own human rights record.
More than 7.7 million Venezuelans have fled the country in recent years due to violence and economic collapse, with over 700,000 seeking refuge in the U.S. Many now fear deportation under the Trump administration’s tougher immigration policies.
Recent deportations have sparked controversy, particularly the transfer of Venezuelans to El Salvador, where they face allegations of gang affiliation and lack access to legal defenses.
Maduro criticized the U.S. policies, calling El Salvador a “second Guantánamo,” and accused the Trump administration of scapegoating Venezuelan migrants for political gain.
