By Zoila Palma: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared Monday that his country is at “maximum preparedness” to defend itself against what he called an escalating threat from U.S. military forces deployed in the Caribbean.
Speaking at a news conference, Maduro warned that any attack by American forces would be met with full resistance, stating he would constitutionally declare a “republic in arms” if Venezuela is targeted, AP reports.
His remarks come amid a significant U.S. military buildup aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks, with multiple Navy destroyers and over 4,000 Marines and sailors either already present or en route to the region.
While the U.S. has not indicated any plans for a ground incursion, the deployment has triggered military mobilization along Venezuela’s coast and border with Colombia.
Maduro’s government has also called on civilians to join armed militias.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil criticized the U.S. operation, calling it a “false narrative” and warning it could destabilize the entire region.
Citing a U.N. report, Gil claimed only a small fraction of cocaine trafficked from Latin America passes through Venezuela, with most moving through the Pacific via Colombia.
The move has further heightened political tensions, both regionally and within Venezuela.
Maduro, whose 2024 election victory remains unrecognized by several Western nations, accused U.S. officials—particularly Secretary of State Marco Rubio—of pushing for regime change under the guise of anti-narcotics operations.
Meanwhile, opposition leader María Corina Machado praised the U.S. deployment as a necessary step against what she called a “criminal enterprise” running Venezuela.
