By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared a state of emergency in Clarendon parish following a weekend of violence that left eight dead, including a seven-year-old boy.
According to Reuters, PM Holness said “We cannot allow murders to be normalized in our country.”
Holness stated that the emergency measures aim to tackle gang violence, though specifics on new regulations were not detailed.
Typically, such measures involve curfews, extended detention, and warrantless searches.
Five arrests have been made related to the shootings.
Holness emphasized the need to prevent retaliation and curb rising crime rates. Despite a reduction in active gangs from 400 to 185 over five years, gang activity remains a serious issue.
Last year, Jamaica was ranked as the second-deadliest country in the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to a study by Insight crime.
The U.S. advises against travel to Jamaica and has designated Clarendon as “off-limits” for embassy staff due to safety concerns.
