By Zoila Palma:  Jamaican officials have welcomed the U.S. State Department’s decision to lower its travel advisory for the country from Level 3 to Level 2, advising Americans to “exercise increased caution” rather than “reconsider travel.”

The revised advisory follows a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in March, during which he pledged to review the guidance and strengthen security cooperation with Jamaica, Reuters report.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness called the update a recognition of Jamaica’s progress, while Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith praised ongoing “constructive dialogue” with international partners.

Though the U.S. still restricts government personnel from visiting certain areas due to crime concerns, the move is seen as a positive step for Jamaica’s vital tourism industry, which drew 4.75 million visitors in 2024 and generated $4.35 billion.

The government aims to surpass 5 million tourists and $5 billion in revenue this year.
