By Zoila Palma: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests at US airports are reportedly becoming more frequent, raising concerns among immigration attorneys who say travelers are increasingly being detained while attempting to board flights.
The arrests come as the agency faces pressure to advance President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda, including a stated goal of approximately 2,000 arrests per day, CNN reports.
Attorneys say the enforcement actions are increasingly targeting people with expired visas and others involved in immigration proceedings. In one recent case, a woman who had entered the United States legally and was seeking asylum was detained at a Washington, DC-area airport while traveling home to Texas for her father’s funeral. Another client represented by attorney Joe Moravec was reportedly detained at a Chicago airport despite also being legally present in the country.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has defended its enforcement approach, saying the administration is working to prevent undocumented immigrants from flying unless they are leaving the country voluntarily.
Immigration attorney Jeff Joseph, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, said the level of enforcement and cooperation between TSA and ICE at airports is unlike anything previously seen.
Former acting ICE Director John Sandweg said airports provide agents with a secure environment where travelers’ information and movements are already known, making arrests easier to carry out with fewer personnel.
