By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hurricane Milton has regained intensity with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, making it a Category 4 storm.
Data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) shows that as of this afternoon, Milton was located approximately 125 miles northeast of Progreso, Mexico, and about 520 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida.
Today marks the last full day for Florida residents to prepare their families and homes, as the storm is expected to make landfall along the west-central coast on Wednesday night.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for various areas, including the west coast from Bonita Beach to the Suwannee River and the east coast from the Indian River/St. Lucie County Line to Ponte Vedra Beach.
A Storm Surge Warning is also in place for both coasts, with expected water levels rising 10-15 feet in some areas, particularly around Tampa Bay and the Anclote River.
Residents are urged to evacuate if instructed and take necessary precautions against potential flooding.
Rainfall totals of 5 to 12 inches are anticipated across central and northern Florida, raising the risk of flash flooding. Tornadoes may also occur in central and southern Florida starting late tonight.
Local authorities are advising residents to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and to prepare for dangerous conditions in the coming days.
