By Zoila Palma: Communities across the Caribbean are struggling to recover after Hurricane Melissa left a trail of catastrophic destruction and claimed more than 50 lives across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, USA Today reports.
The powerful storm made landfall in Jamaica on October 28 as a Category 5 hurricane with winds reaching 185 mph — the strongest hurricane ever to strike the island — before moving on to Cuba, the Bahamas, and near Bermuda.
In Jamaica, at least 19 deaths have been confirmed, though officials warn the number is expected to rise as rescuers reach isolated areas. Haiti recorded 31 deaths, most caused by severe flooding in the coastal town of Petit-Goâve, while two fatalities were reported in the Dominican Republic.
Across Jamaica, hundreds of thousands remain without power, and widespread damage has been reported to homes, public buildings, and infrastructure.
“The situation on the ground is what can only be described as apocalyptic,” said Brian Bogart, Caribbean director of the World Food Programme, during a briefing in Black River, Jamaica.
Government officials say food and aid deliveries are underway, though access to several parishes remains cut off.
