By Zoila Palma:  Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are scheduled to go on trial in New York on June 1, 2027, over alleged weapons and drug-related offenses, which both deny.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein set the trial date on Wednesday and scheduled a pre-trial hearing for November 17 to consider motions from both sides.

U.S. forces reportedly seized Maduro and Flores during a nighttime raid on their compound in Caracas on January 3 before bringing them to the United States to face prosecution.

Maduro’s defense attorney, Barry Pollack, has indicated that he may argue that his client is protected by sovereign immunity, a legal principle that can shield heads of state from prosecution.

The court hearing drew significant public attention, with spectators reportedly waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of the former Venezuelan leader.

Maduro appeared in court wearing a beige jail uniform but was not handcuffed. He and Flores used headphones for translation as their attorneys met with the judge, and Maduro later waved to members of the public before being escorted from the courthouse by U.S. Marshals.
