By Zoila Palma: Flávio Bolsonaro, the defeated presidential candidate in Brazil’s recent election, has arrived at Opa-locka Executive Airport near Miami, Florida, following days of speculation about his whereabouts.
His arrival comes after he lost a runoff election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, BBC reports.
Bolsonaro emerged from the first round of voting in early October with 47% of the vote but was defeated by Lula in the runoff. He subsequently indicated that he intended to challenge the election results, raising political tensions following the closely watched contest.
Before his arrival in the United States, Brazil’s Supreme Court had ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering.
Bolsonaro, who has denied the allegations and has not been charged in connection with them, reportedly failed to surrender the documents by the deadline, prompting authorities to cancel his passports.
His whereabouts became the subject of widespread speculation after he stopped making public statements and his lawyers reportedly said they did not know where he was.
The U.S. State Department had confirmed that visas would be issued to Bolsonaro and his family, allowing them to enter the United States.
