By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a new advisory urging airlines to “exercise caution” when operating in Venezuelan airspace, citing a “potentially hazardous situation” caused by worsening security conditions and increased military activity in the region.
The warning comes as the United States expands its military presence across the Caribbean, deploying bombers, warships and Marines under U.S. Southern Command as part of a broader crackdown on drug-trafficking and so-called “narco-terrorist” networks near Venezuela, Fox reports.
According to the FAA, operators flying through the Maiquetia Flight Information Region face risks at all altitudes, including during takeoff, landing and ground operations. The notice also highlighted a surge in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference reported since September, which in some cases affected aircraft even after leaving the airspace.
The agency warned that GNSS jammers and spoofers can impact critical communication, navigation and safety systems up to 250 nautical miles away. Airlines planning to transit the area are asked to provide the FAA with 72 hours’ advance notice.
While direct U.S. flights to Venezuela have been suspended since 2019, several international carriers still overfly the country on South American routes.
