By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has accused Venezuela of electoral fraud in the recent presidential elections, declaring that the results do not reflect reality, El Tiempo reports.
Bukele announced on Monday that his country would not resume diplomatic relations with Venezuela until “real elections” are held.
In a statement on X, Bukele described the Venezuelan election as “fraudulent,” asserting that the official results are disconnected from the actual voting outcomes.
“What we saw yesterday in Venezuela has no other name than fraud. An ‘election’ where the official result has no relation to reality. Something obvious to anyone,” he said.
Bukele’s comments follow El Salvador’s suspension of diplomatic relations with Venezuela in November 2020, after his government ordered the expulsion of the Venezuelan diplomatic mission.
Bukele reaffirmed that El Salvador will not restore these relations until Venezuela conducts elections that meet international standards of fairness.
Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the Venezuelan presidential election by the National Electoral Council (CNE), securing 51.2% of the vote according to the official count.
This result came despite claims from the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Venezuela’s largest anti-Chavez coalition, which argues that their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, won by a significant margin.
The CNE’s announcement reported that with 80% of the ballots counted, Maduro led with 51.2%, with over two million votes still to be accounted for.
González Urrutia received 44.2% of the vote in the initial report, but the CNE did not disclose the distribution of the remaining 2,394,268 votes.
González Urrutia has criticized the election process, alleging that “all the rules have been violated” and accusing the electoral body of withholding voting records from over half of the voting centers.
This has fueled skepticism about the integrity of the election results and calls for an independent review.
