The November 3 elections reflected widespread voter frustration over rising prices, the war in Iran and concerns about government corruption.
Democrats secured victories across the country, flipping states that had consistently supported Republicans for decades, including several that Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024, AP reports.
Among the most significant results was James Talarico’s Senate victory in Texas, marking a historic breakthrough for Democrats in a state where the party had not won statewide office in more than 30 years. His victory highlighted the extent of the political shift and the challenges facing Republicans in traditionally conservative strongholds.
In South Carolina, Democratic Senate candidate Dr. Annie Andrews also secured an upset victory over Republican Senator Darline Graham. Both defeated candidates had received strong backing from Trump, making their losses further evidence of the president’s declining political influence in key races.
The Democratic victories are expected to reshape the political landscape in Washington, creating a new era of congressional resistance to Trump’s agenda.
With control of both chambers, Democrats will have greater power to challenge the administration’s policies and influence legislative priorities as the country grapples with economic and international challenges.
