By Zoila Palma: A dangerous heatwave is scorching millions of people across the eastern United States as the Fourth of July holiday weekend gets underway, bringing record-breaking temperatures and raising concerns for outdoor celebrations.
The extreme heat is expected to continue with about 25 million people across central and eastern parts of the country experiencing some of the hottest conditions of the year.
Several cities have already recorded temperatures not seen in years. New York City reached 100°F (38°C) on Thursday, marking its hottest day since 2012, while Philadelphia climbed to 103°F (39°C), its highest temperature since 2011. Washington, D.C., is also on track to record four consecutive days of 100°F heat, an occurrence that has happened only twice before. “These are extremely dangerous conditions,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned.
The intense heat comes as President Donald Trump is expected to host an outdoor celebration marking America’s 250th birthday on Saturday, while several FIFA World Cup matches are also scheduled to be played outdoors.
Forecasters say the heat is expected to ease in some central regions by Saturday but will remain dangerously high across much of the East before shifting toward the Southeast and western North America next week.
Scientists continue to warn that heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting due to human-induced climate change.
