By Zoila Palma: On Monday, Cuba confirmed that it recently held talks with U.S. officials on the island, marking a rare diplomatic exchange as tensions remain high over Washington’s energy blockade of the Caribbean nation.
The meeting is believed to be the first visit by American diplomats to Cuba since 2016, AP reports.
According to Cuban officials, the U.S. delegation included assistant secretaries of state, while Cuba was represented by senior officials at the deputy foreign minister level. The discussions were described as respectful and professional, with no threats or deadlines issued during the exchange.
Alejandro García del Toro said the removal of the U.S. energy embargo was a central focus for Cuba during the meeting. He characterized the sanctions as an unjustified form of economic pressure affecting the entire Cuban population and criticized them as a violation of free trade principles.
The United States, however, continues to maintain conditions for lifting sanctions, including demands that Cuba address political repression, release political prisoners, and implement economic reforms to liberalize its struggling economy.
