By Zoila Palma: Cristiano Ronaldo is preparing to make history once again as he gets set to begin his sixth FIFA World Cup when Portugal opens its campaign against DR Congo later today.
At 41 years old, the Portuguese captain joins a select group of players to have appeared in six World Cups, adding another milestone to an already remarkable career.
Portugal manager Roberto Martínez said Ronaldo is approaching the tournament with the same enthusiasm and intensity he displayed when he played in his first World Cup two decades ago. Martínez praised the veteran forward for continuing to set the standard in training and serving as an example for the rest of the squad despite having already achieved nearly every major honor in football.
The 2026 World Cup offers Ronaldo another opportunity to pursue the one major trophy that has eluded him throughout his career—a World Cup title. Martínez has consistently defended Ronaldo’s place in the national team, citing his recent goal-scoring record and continued contributions for both club and country. Since Martínez took charge of Portugal, Ronaldo has remained one of the team’s most productive players.
Portugal enters the tournament with a talented roster that includes Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and Rúben Dias. However, much of the attention will remain focused on Ronaldo, whose appearance comes just a day after Lionel Messi made headlines with a World Cup hat trick.
