By Zoila Palma: Canadian authorities are preparing to evacuate a remote community in northwestern Ontario as fast-moving wildfires continue to threaten residents and send thick smoke across large areas of the United States.
Federal Emergencies Minister Eleanor Olszewski announced that the Canadian Armed Forces will use aircraft to evacuate approximately 600 residents of Fort Hope, an isolated community with limited road access that relies heavily on air transportation.
Thousands of people have already been evacuated from other wildfire-affected communities across Ontario, The Detroit News reports.
The latest fires are part of an increasingly severe wildfire season in Canada, where major forest fires have become an annual challenge. Climate experts say rising temperatures and prolonged dry conditions have left forests more vulnerable to ignition and rapid fire spread. The Canadian government has stepped up emergency response efforts as firefighters continue battling blazes across the region.
The wildfire smoke has significantly reduced air quality across parts of both Canada and the United States.
