By Zoila Palma: Air New Zealand is set to introduce a new travel option for economy passengers that allows them to lie down and rest during ultra-long-haul flights, CNN reports.
The airline will offer sleeping pods called Economy Skynest on its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with bookings opening on May 18 for flights beginning in November.
The Skynest feature includes six individual bunk-style sleeping spaces designed with a mattress, bedding, privacy curtain, seat belt, reading light, charging ports, and an amenity kit.
According to the airline, cabin crew will refresh pillows, sheets, and blankets between each use to maintain cleanliness and comfort for passengers.
Air New Zealand said the new pods are intended to give economy travelers the chance to “stretch out, lie flat and get a few hours’ proper rest in the air.”
Each booking will allow passengers to use a bunk for four hours at a time, priced at $495 per session, with the airline noting that the design is based on research into natural sleep cycles of around 90 minutes.
