By Zoila Palma:  Airlines across the United States moved quickly to assist thousands of stranded travelers after Spirit Airlines abruptly halted operations in the early hours of May 2, canceling all flights.

The sudden shutdown left passengers scrambling to secure alternative travel arrangements, as the carrier confirmed it would not be able to rebook customers on other airlines. Spirit said refunds would be issued immediately to passengers who purchased tickets directly through its website using credit or debit cards, USA Today reports.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said multiple carriers stepped in following discussions with the Department of Transportation to help affected passengers return home.

According to the department, major airlines including American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways committed to offering support through discounted or capped “rescue fares” on routes previously served by Spirit.

Several airlines introduced specific measures to ease disruptions. United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest implemented fare caps for passengers able to provide proof of a canceled Spirit booking.

American Airlines and Delta also reduced fares on high-traffic routes, while Allegiant froze prices on overlapping routes. Frontier announced up to 50 percent off base fares across its network for a limited time, aiming to help travelers maintain their plans despite the disruption.

Additional assistance varied by carrier, with some offering promotional discounts and loyalty status matches for frequent flyers.
