By Zoila Palma: An Air India Boeing 787-8 carrying 242 people crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all aboard and several on the ground, AP reports.
Officials report no known survivors.
The flight, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, went down in the Meghani Nagar area, striking a medical college hostel and igniting a massive fire.
At least five students on the ground were killed, and dozens more injured.
The crash, the first ever involving a Boeing 787, occurred just five minutes after takeoff at 1:38 p.m. local time. Among the victims were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “heartbreaking,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III extended condolences.
Air India has launched a support center for families of victims. Boeing said it is gathering information on the incident. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
