By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last month, Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro announced that Christmas would begin on October 1, a move met with mixed reactions as his government intensified its crackdown on political dissent.
“September smells like Christmas!” he declared on his weekly television show, promising “peace, joy, and security” during the holidays.
According to CNN, the announcement came as Maduro faces increasing pressure following July’s disputed presidential election, which he claims to have won despite widespread allegations of fraud from the opposition.
Hours before his announcement, authorities issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez, accusing him of terrorism-related crimes.
The crackdown has led to over 2,400 arrests amid protests against the election results, with Human Rights Watch reporting a rise in violence, including at least 24 confirmed deaths related to political unrest.
Despite the festive announcement, Maduro has ordered the opening of two new prisons to accommodate detained protesters, emphasizing a hardline approach.
His administration’s tactics have drawn criticism, with the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference warning that Christmas should not be politicized.
