By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Cuba on Sunday, adding to the island’s recent struggles with hurricanes and widespread blackouts.

The quake, with its epicenter about 25 miles south of Bartolome Maso, was felt in cities like Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Guantánamo, as well as in Jamaica.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries in Cuba, though residents in Santiago described intense shaking and aftershocks.

Some in Pilón reported minor damage, such as cracks in walls and crumbling roofs, common in the island’s older buildings, AP reports.

This tremor comes on the heels of severe disruptions: just days earlier, Hurricane Rafael caused island-wide power outages and significant destruction, and ongoing blackouts have fueled public discontent.
