By Zoila Palma:Today, September 28, 2026, marks the International Day for Universal Access to Information, with this year’s theme focusing on “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder.”
The observance highlights the importance of ensuring that people have access not only to information, but to timely and reliable information.
UNESCO says credible public information can strengthen trust, support informed decision-making and allow people to participate meaningfully in society.
In an increasingly digital environment filled with misinformation and disinformation, access to reliable official information, proactive disclosure, credible data, media and information literacy, and responsible use of digital technologies are seen as important tools for creating a healthier information environment.
Universal access to information means that everyone has the right to seek, receive and share information, a right closely connected to freedom of expression and freedom of the press. UNESCO declared September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access to Information in 2015, with the UN General Assembly adopting the observance in 2019.
