By Aaron Humes: This afternoon, Sunday, members of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association were told, “PLEASE DON’T BURN CANE YET” per social media.

In an urgent notice the BSCFA writes, “The contract with BSI has not yet been signed for reasons that BSI [Belize Sugar Industries Limited] has made several changes, which cannot be proceeded (with) like this, until it has the content of the terms we agreed on.”

They added that their attorneys are following up, but until then, “Let’s show our strength and patience!”

A deal was tentatively reached late Thursday, but we understand that additional language concerning the planned investigation into throughput and terminal handling charges at the major ports by BSI/ASR was not accepted by BSCFA. The agreement was for an investigation to be conducted by a trusted mediator, but it appears BSI/ASR tried to set parameters to the investigation, which the farmers did not approve.
