By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The murder of Belmopan physician and businessman Dr. Naum Ulices Bonilla shocked Belize, but police say a relentless investigation helped them identify suspects and bring murder charges within days of the killing.
Dr. Bonilla was gunned down outside his Belmopan residence on May 29 shortly after arriving home. The brazen attack stunned the nation and immediately triggered a major police operation.
Investigators quickly began collecting surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses and tracking movements connected to the crime. Police also followed multiple leads while examining both Dr. Bonilla’s personal and professional relationships.
Within days, investigators announced they had identified a vehicle and a person of interest linked to the case. That breakthrough eventually led to the arrest of 26-year-old laboratory scientist Hannah Rebekah Foreman and 37-year-old electrician Edwin Albert Bethran Jr., both of whom have now been charged with murder.
Police believe the motive behind the killing was rooted in a bitter business dispute involving a medical laboratory operation jointly owned by Dr. Bonilla and Foreman.
According to investigators, the dispute centered on control of the business and a lucrative National Health Insurance contract. Police say evidence gathered during the investigation pointed to a deteriorating relationship between the business partners that eventually escalated far beyond the courtroom.
The accused appeared before the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on Friday and were remanded to prison as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
