By Horace Palacio: Belizean families are once again mourning the loss of two young men. Jael Guzman and Ranick Chavaria died on Saturday morning in Concepción Village after their motorcycle collided with a bus. They never made it home.
Their deaths highlight a sad truth: motorcycles remain one of the deadliest forms of transportation in Belize. Accidents involving motorcycles are becoming a routine headline, but they should never be normalized.
The solution is clear: tougher laws and stronger enforcement. Helmets must be made mandatory, licensing must be more rigorous, and penalties for reckless and drunk riding must be harsh enough to deter dangerous behavior. Enforcement must also be stepped up, particularly at night when so many crashes occur.
The accident in Corozal is a painful example of what happens when road safety is not prioritized. Belize cannot afford to keep losing its young men to preventable accidents. It is time for the Government to show the political will to act before the next headline writes itself.
