By Aaron Humes: Corozal Town has been rocked by the murder of 55-year-old Santos Escobar, who was shot and killed at his home in the Rainbow Beach area Tuesday night.
Around 8:40 PM, Escobar was socializing with two acquaintances in front of his residence when an unidentified man approached and opened fire, striking Escobar. The two other individuals managed to escape without injury. Escobar was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stacy Smith detailed the investigation as it has unfolded so far: “We have retrieved a number of video footages that we are hoping to be of assistance in the ongoing investigation. No motive has been established [so] far…we do know that there was another shooting incident at that very location on 9th of March and on that occasion, we did not get much from the person whose house was shot up however we are investigating to see if there is any nexus between those two incidents.”
As the investigation proceeds, police are also looking into whether Santos Escobar had any prior encounters with law enforcement; ASP Smith stated she knew of none. Community members are urged to come forward with any information that might assist in the ongoing investigation.
