By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize Police Department officer is out on bail after being charged in a violent domestic incident in which he allegedly stabbed his common-law wife and then stabbed himself in the neck, leaving both for dead.

Thirty-seven-year-old PC Mercedes Genaro Chiac, attached to the GI3 Unit, was arraigned on Thursday morning in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on charges of use of deadly means of harm and wounding in relation to injuries caused to his partner, a 28-year-old sales clerk.

The arraignment comes just days after another police officer faced court on similar allegations, marking what many are calling another troubling incident for the department.

In a notable development, Munoz was brought to court—reportedly in hopes of withdrawing the charges—but was never allowed into the courtroom and was not heard during the proceedings. Prosecutors informed the court that no plea would be taken at this stage as they await directives from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how the matter will proceed.

Chiac, who appeared unrepresented, was granted bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $1,000 each, which he met shortly after 1:40 p.m. He is due back in court on June 9, 2026.

According to police reports, the incident occurred late Sunday night, April 19, on Riverside Street in Belize City. Authorities responded to reports of two persons suffering stab wounds and found both the woman and Chiac injured.

Munoz reportedly told police that shortly before 11:00 p.m., Chiac confronted her when she arrived home, accusing her of her whereabouts before allegedly pushing and repeatedly punching her. She said she was knocked to the ground and choked for several seconds, leaving her struggling to breathe.

Two men, identified as Chiac’s brother and a friend, reportedly intervened in an attempt to calm him. However, the woman alleges that Chiac broke away, retrieved a knife from the kitchen, and stabbed her to the neck. He then allegedly stabbed himself in the neck and collapsed.

Both were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police say Munoz’s injuries were classified as wounding.

Following an investigation and a formal statement from the woman, Chiac was charged earlier today.

The case adds to growing scrutiny over incidents involving police officers accused of domestic violence, particularly as another officer, PC Phillip Garbutt, recently had similar charges withdrawn in court.
