Honduras’ Independiente overwhelm Orange Walk Futsal 11-4 in Opening Night of International Futsal Tournament

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a rough start to the first-ever International Futsal Tournament, Honduras’ Independiente dominated the home side, Orange Walk Futsal, with an 11-4 victory in the second match of Opening Night on Friday, August 16, at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex in Orange Walk Town.

César Suazo was unstoppable for Independiente, scoring an impressive six goals. Jean López added to the tally with a brace, while Jairo Alemán, Christopher Alejandro, and Daniel Morazán each contributed a goal.

Despite the loss, Michael Cruz and Enrique Valdez shone for Orange Walk, each netting a brace.

The tournament, organized by the National Futsal League of Belize (NFLB), kicked off with a thrilling but unfortunate opener as El Salvador’s Cojute narrowly edged out Belmopan Futsal 10-9, setting the tone for an exciting competition.

Orange Walk and Independiente are competing in Group B, along with San Jose Futsal from Guatemala. Meanwhile, Belmopan Futsal and Cojute are in Group A, alongside FC Fútbol RM from Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

The tournament features a single round-robin format, with group matches concluding on Saturday. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals on Sunday, followed by the final and third-place matches.

Saturday’s action promises more excitement, starting at 7:30 pm. Belmopan will face Mexico’s FC Fútbol RM at 9:30 pm, and Orange Walk will take on Guatemala’s San Jose at 10:30 pm. (See full schedule below).
