By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old construction worker is behind bars tonight after being accused of burglarizing the Ladyville Evangelical Primary School twice in a single day.

Hilberto Ramos, who has no fixed address, appeared in court on Tuesday, where he was charged with two counts of burglary. He initially pleaded guilty but later changed his plea to not guilty upon learning that he could face a custodial sentence.

According to police reports, on Monday, March 3, 2025, Ramos allegedly broke into the school, located at Mile 12 1/2 on the Philip Goldson Highway, and stole various items, including a black Bluetooth speaker valued at $99, cleaning supplies worth $22.20, and other miscellaneous items.

Later that same day, he reportedly broke in again and stole additional items, including a $90 Lasko fan, a black Velocity wall fan worth $75, a wire extension cord, assorted cleaning aids, and a Yazbek-brand blue T-shirt with the words “Belize Adventure Awaits.” The total value of the stolen items remains unknown.

In court, Senior Magistrate of Court #3 asked Ramos if he understood the seriousness of the charges. When he realized a guilty plea could result in imprisonment, he changed his plea to not guilty, stating, “I don’t want to go to jail.”

Given the rise in burglary cases across Belize, the Magistrate denied bail and remanded Ramos to the Belize Central Prison until May 7, 2025.

The case began after a teacher from Ladyville Evangelical Primary School reported a burglary to the police. She stated that on Monday, March 3, 2025, at about 3:30 p.m., she securely locked her Standard One classroom. However, when she returned the following morning at 8:10 a.m., she noticed two wooden louvers from the front window had been removed. Upon entering, she discovered her classroom had been ransacked and several items stolen, including fans, an extension cord, cleaning supplies, and a branded T-shirt.

Following an investigation, police arrested and charged Ramos in connection with the burglary. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
